Markus Boyd

In 2002, Markus advised his friend and colleague Russell Malloyd aka “Pretty Russ” on his independent release Mr. Malloyd. It was well received in the Midwest region, and garnered a successful local single “Chucks, Forces, Tims, Gators” which was a local St. Louis Hit, sparking interest from several Major Labels at the time. Markus participated in several successful aspects of the manufacturing of CD’s and Vinyl, marketing, and promotions the single in clubs and on radio.
In 2003, after working for several successful world re-known Real Estate firms, knew the time was right to strike out on his own. Markus formed a Real Estate company MB Properties & Investments, and Mortgage company K.I.P. Financial, Inc. in his Southern California home town of Rancho Cucamonga, California as an initial one-man operation in an empty leased office space. Within three years, Markus built the businesses up to a 12 person fully staffed, professionally respected factor, inside of a 3500 square foot facility the businesses now owned.
As the real estate market began to peak in late 1996, Markus knew the time and opportunity was right to began the transition phase back to the Music. He now had the experience, know how, and capital needed to make his dreams a reality. He turned to no other than his friend and business peer Russell Malloyd to ensure both of their dreams could become realities. Markus also reached out to a few longtime local friends still actively working in the music scene, and began to lay the new foundation of OWN 1 Entertainment.

Throughout 2007 and 2008, OWN 1 Entertainment began signing artists, and producers, and recording their Own material, and stockpiling their catalogue. In 2008 they began to test drive singles through shows and showcases, and once the opportunity was right, Markus reached out to Native Records, which was a Fontana/Universal subsidiary of the time, and was offered an Independent Distribution deal.
While trying to complete the final specifics of the agreement, Markus was dealt another devastating blow. His long time friend, colleague, and even Mentor Russell Malloyd passed away of heart failure in October, 2008, at the young age of 35.
Throughout the remainder of 2008 and early 2009, Markus began to realize that life is not always as long as we would like it to be and we don’t always have the time to plan everything as precisely as we may think. It was time for OWN 1 Entertainment to become a reality. Markus heard about the 2009 IE Weekly Magazine having an awards show and submitted OWN 1 Entertainment acts 100 (One-Hunned), Kash Kanive, and Producer Lexx Complexx for consideration. All 3 were nominated, and the group 100 won for best Hip-Hop act. Since then, OWN 1 Entertainment has signed 4 other acts from Southern California and St. Louis.
Markus worked closely with label reps and began to rebuild and establish OWN 1 Entertainment with the same 3 regions from his past (Southern California, St. Louis, and Atlanta) in mind to successfully establish the Brand as a force to be reckoned with in this business. Throughout the remainder of 2009 and early 2010, the label completed their Compilation “Blanco Mixtape: Vol.1 Work on the Street.” It is undoubtedly a breath of fresh air to the current state of Southern California Hip-Hop, and Music in General. He not only preaches, but practices and perfects the craft of Ownership, because it is the only way to ensure you remain standing; as OWN 1 Entertainment’s intended to. Markus is now actively seeking physical distribution for OWN 1 Entertainment releases and will commit the remainder of his life in some way, shape, form, or fashion to his Love and passion of the Music Business.
